The Sacred use of Marijuana predates written history and has played a prominent role in the religions and civilizations of Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa. A pot-stoned head space is really not that far removed from the detached, blissed-out satori of many a dedicated meditator. Cannabis can transform any act into a ritualized, spiritual one (chop wood, carry water, chop wood, carry water). On the sensory level, marijuana readily lends itself to the stillness, focus & body awareness necessary for Tantra.
This tradition continues today among "diverse African tribes, certain Hindu sects, Muslim fakirs & Sufis, Rastafarians, as well as modern Occultists & Pagans" (not to mention hippies etc...).

Given the nature of the Marijuana high and it's world-wide distribution as a fibre plant, pot (along with psychedelic mushrooms) would seem to be a very likely source of many of humanity's original spiritual impulses and experiences.

An interesting (though difficult to obtain) book on this subject is
"Green Gold The Tree Of Life- Marijuana In Magic & Religion"
by Chris Bennett, Lynn Osburn & Judy Osburn,
published by Access Unlimited, P.O. Box 1900, Frazier Park, CA 93225. USA.
Highly recommended!!
